Six Month Smiles treatment at Absolute Dental - don't just take our word for it!

It's very easy for us in the dental profession to get carried away and extol the results of dental treatments, but I think I can honestly say that everyone at Absolute Dental has been totally blown away by the results achieved with the Six Month Smiles short term orthodontic system.

But, you don't just have to take our word for it - here is what some of the patients who have had the treatment with Rhod have to say about their treatment, and their new smiles!

"Yesterday I received the best Christmas present, which has truly put a smile on my face. I would like to thank Rhod and the team for the excellent job they did on my Six Month Smile programme.
Before I went to see Rhod the dentist petrified me, but Rhod and the team made me feel at complete ease and comfortable through every stage that I went in. I left yesterday and my smile just won't disappear, I love how they've given me so much confidence to show my teeth every time I smile now. So thank you, you've done a amazing job."

The management and staff at Absolute Dental go above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that I am happy, comfortable and calm. Which is no mean feat considering I am scared of dentists!! I would, and do, recommend them to everyone." RD

10 Tips from Absolute Dental for Looking After Your Smile DURING your Six Month Smile treatment

It is so important to look after the health of your whole mouth whilst undergoing your Six Month Smiles treatment and we suggest that you pay special attention not only to your teeth and gums, but also to the brackets and wires.

Here are 10 simple steps for keeping your teeth, gums and braces in great shape:
  1. Brush your teeth, gums braces and wires thoroughly after each meal and before going to bed. Poor oral hygiene can result in puffy, bleeding gums and permanent white spots on your teeth. Inflammation and bleeding could delay your treatment.
  2. Using a fluoride toothpaste and a soft, compact toothbrush (you may find an electric toothbrush helpful) place your brush at an angle of 45 degrees against the gums. Gently brush along the gum line where the gums and teeth meet, using a small circular motion on each tooth.
  3. Spend about 10 seconds on each tooth before moving onto the next tooth, brushing in a set pattern so that you don't miss any teeth.
  4. An interproximal brush is the best way to clean around your braces, these can be purchased at Absolute Dental, or at most chemists. This brush can also be used between your teeth and at the gum line.
  5. Brush both the inside and the outside surfaces of your teeth using a gentle circular motion on each tooth.
  6. For the chewing surfaces, use a firm back and forth motion.
  7. Spit out excess paste, then closely inspect your teeth and braces in the mirror to check that they are clean and shiny.
  8. After brushing, rinse with a fluoride mouthwash for 1 minute to help prevent cavities and white spots.
  9. Avoid hard food such as popcorn, toffees and hard sweets as these foods can break the brackets.
  10. Cut up foods such as meats, apples, carrots etc before eating them

The sexiest curve is a Smile - Valentines thoughts from Absolute Dental

One of the sexiest things in the world is a smile. Not the sly smile of seduction (although that is definitely sexy), but  a genuine smile from the heart. The kind that radiates joy and happiness, the kind where the eyes of the person smiling absolutely twinkle and sparkle. The kind of smile you can actually feel because the positive energy of the person smiling is palpable.

There has been much research into how smiling can help reduce the level of stress-enhancing hormones like cortisol, adrenaline, and dopamine; increase the level of mood-enhancing hormones like endorphin; and reduce overall blood pressure.’ If you think about it, you too probably feel better when you smile!

Think about how this relates to sexiness for a moment. Think about the sexiest people you know. Chances are they are calm, confidence and they ooze a relaxed, positive presence. Let’s face it; people who are perpetually negative or seldom smile, rarely appear sexy or sensuous.

Negative people are generally living in their heads, passing judgment and making assumptions. But those who smile more tend to be more grounded and notice the beauty in the little things around them. When people smile it has a positive affect on the systems in their bodies, and they feel better. And when you feel better you tend to smile more, which is a pretty lovely cycle to be in!

When people smile they carry themselves straighter, their walk is sure, they hold their head higher and they appear more confident. It’s impossible to express a genuine smile without boosting your own happiness. If it’s authentic, your eyes will glisten with a soft, gentle grin as well as with a big beaming smile. Keep it real. Be aware of how often you smile from within and be mindful to express it with your eyes. You will notice a beautiful unfolding of confidence, happiness and sexiness. And that will be attractive to everyone around you.

Smiling at others with radiance is a gift that increases the well-being and happiness of both giver and receiver. When we are blessed to receive a smile from within we are bearing witness to the inner beauty and pure essence of the giver. So over the next week (and particularly on Valentines Day!) try something: Make a conscious effort to smile with a twinkle in your eye and give the gift of that smile to others. Let your inner essence and sexiness shine through, and take note of how you feel!

If, on the other hand, you do not feel confident in your smile, maybe we can help. Why not contact Absolute Dental on 01548 852165 or email us info@absolute-dental.co.uk and book a complimentary consultation with our team to see the many ways in which we may be able to give you the confidence back in your smile!

World Cancer Day - Absolute Dental Asks: Can Cancer be Prevented?

Today (Feb 4th 2015) is World Cancer day, Cancer Research UK are calling on the nation to unite by  asking us to come together to remember the lost, to join forces to celebrate survivors, to rally in support of those fighting cancer, and to unite to protect future generations.

With this is mind, we ask the question - Can Cancer be Prevented??

Many people believe that getting cancer is purely down to genes, fate or bad luck. But through scientific research, we know that our risk actually depends on a combination of our genes, our environment and aspects of our lives, many of which we can control.

Cancer is caused by damage to our DNA, the chemical instructions that tell our cells what to do. Things in our environment, such as UV rays, or our lifestyle, such as the cancer causing chemicals in tobacco, can damage our DNA. This damage builds up over time. If a cell develops too much damage to its DNA it can start to multiply out of control - this is how cancer starts.

Some people inherit damaged DNA from their parents, which can give them a higher risk of certain cancers. For example the BRCA genes are linked with breast, ovarian, prostate and other cancers. But the proportion of cancers caused by inherited faulty genes is small.

In the UK, more than one in three people will develop cancer at some point in their lives. Every year, around 325,000 people are diagnosed with the disease. But experts estimate that more than four in 10 cancer cases could be prevented by lifestyle changes, such as:
  • not smoking
  • keeping a healthy body weight
  • cutting back on alcohol
  • eating a healthy, balanced diet
  • keeping active
  • avoiding certain infections (like HPV)
  • staying safe in the sun
  • occupation
Surveys of the population have shown that people aren't necessarily aware that all of those things are linked to cancer. For example, the Cancer Research UK funded Perceptions of Risk Survey in 2008 found that only 3 per cent of the people polled knew that being overweight or obese could increase their risk of cancer.

Is prevention a guarantee?

Preventing cancer doesn’t work in the same way as preventing infectious diseases with vaccines.
‘Healthy living’ is not a cast-iron guarantee against cancer. But it stacks the odds in our favour, by reducing the risk of developing the disease.
For example, we know that it’s possible for a heavy smoker to live a cancer-free life, while someone who never touches cigarettes could develop lung cancer. But lots of large, long-term studies clearly show that people who have never smoked are far less likely to develop or die from cancer than smokers.
In the same way, careful drivers cannot guarantee that they will never get into an accident due to events beyond their control, but they are much less likely to do so than reckless ones.

Can lifestyle changes really make a difference?

Yes, and not just for cancer. In 2008, a large UK study worked out how a combination of four healthy behaviours would affect your health. These were: not smoking; keeping active; moderating how much alcohol you drink; and eating five daily portions of fruit and vegetables.

People who ticked all four healthy boxes gained an average of 14 years of life compared to people who did not do any of them. By the end of the study, they were less likely to have died from any cause.
