A great alternative to sugar with BENEFITS to tooth health!

It is widely known that sugar caused dental caries (decay), and so it is always good news to hear of pleasant tasting alternatives. Xylitol is not only an alternative, but it actually has BENEFITS to dental health:

  • Xylitol is a natural sugar alcohol that helps prevents cavities.
  • Xylitol is the sugar alcohol that shows the greatest promise for cavity prevention.
  • It is equal in sweetness and volume to sugar and the granular form can be used in many of the ways that sugar is used, including to sweeten cereals and hot beverages and for baking.
  • Xylitol inhibits the growth of the bacteria that cause cavities. It does this because the bacteria that causes cavities cannot utilize xylitol to grow.
  • Over time with xylitol use, the quality of the bacteria in the mouth changes and fewer and fewer of the decay-causing bacteria survive on tooth surfaces. Less plaque then forms and the level of acids attacking the tooth surface is lowered.
I have been trying been trying many xylitol products recently including gum and mints which taste great, freshen breath and help prevent cavities. I have also used xylitol in baking which turned out great! Xylitol looks and tastes just like sugar so couldn’t be easier to use as a substitute, why not try it yourself?

Xylitol gum or mints used 3-5 times daily, for a total intake of 5 grams, is considered optimal. Because frequency and duration of exposure is important, gum should be chewed for approximately 5 minutes and mints should be allowed to dissolve. Xylitol containing products can be found in most supermarkets these days and bags of xylitol can be bought in most health food stores.

Please let us know if you would like any more information on this excellent product!

Enjoying your Easter Eggs without harming your teeth! Advice from Absolute Dental.

I don't know about you, but I'm really looking forward to Easter - what's not to love, the sun is shining and it's the longest Bank Holiday of the year AND there is chocolate involved!!!!

Because of the temptation of so many lovely chocolate eggs and sweet treats to enjoy, it is really important that we do not neglect our dental health and as dental professionals, we are here to ensure that you look after your teeth and gums, all year around, but it seems more topical at this time of year. This advice is for everyone, but particularly important for children.

Tooth Decay occurs when we any consume food or drink that contains sugar. Bacteria in the plaque on our teeth mix with the sugar and change it into acid. This acid then attacks the surface of the teeth, causing it to weaken or ‘demineralise'.  This can cause considerable irreversible damage to the teeth and lead to cavities.

So, here is our advice for enjoying those Easter Eggs and avoiding cavities:

 1. Enjoy your Easter Eggs it at mealtimes rather than between meals. Saliva in your mouth helps neutralise the acid produced by the plaque bacteria during mealtimes so it is best to eat that treats when having one of your main meals. Saliva helps to neutralise the plaque acids, wash away food debris & repair the early effects of tooth decay by 'remineralising'  tooth enamel (it's so very clever!).

2. Eat a small piece of sugar free chewing gum after a meal or sugary treat. Chewing on gum helps to stimulate saliva, neutralise acid and keep bacteria from sticking to the surface of the teeth.

3. Drink a glass of tap water after eating any of those yummy Easter treats. This helps to flush away the sugars that create acids and cause decay. There is fluoride found in tap water will also help protect your teeth.

4. Don't forget to brush and floss your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste!

Follow this simple advice, and you can enjoy your Easter Eggs without harming your teeth. Always remember - everything in moderation!!!!

Happy Easter from all of the all of the team at Absolute Dental

Cola - as bad for teeth as crack cocaine

I never thought it would write a blog with either the word "cola" or the words "crack cocaine" in the title - but here it is!

This comes from an article I read recently and highlights the damage excessive consumption of fizzy drinks can have on your teeth - the damage can be as bad as that caused by methamphetamine or crack cocaine (according to a study in General Dentistry magazine).

The study carried out by Dr Mohamed Bassiouny of Temple University School of Dentistry in Philadelphia reports that meth, crack cocaine and fizzy drinks, whether sweetened or not, are all highly acidic and can cause similar dental problems.

The teeth of those addicted to meth or crack cocaine can be misdiagnosed as dental caries (decay) rather than generalised dental erosion - a condition which is also associated with chronic, excessive consumption of fizzy drinks.

Failure to identify the cause of a dental "disease" such as erosion could lead to wrongful diagnosis and could also adversely affect any treatment planning.

At Absolute Dental our clinicians always discuss a patients diet with them if we see high levels of caries or have concerns over erosion.

One of the common causes of erosion we see today is due to "sports drinks" or "energy drinks". These are often associated with fitness and wellbeing as they are drunk as part of a training schedule, however the acidity levels and high sugar content (up to 13 teaspoons of sugar in some cases!) is of huge concern to us as dental professionals.

If you would like more advice on healthy alternatives to popular fizzy drinks or energy drinks, pop in and speak to one of our team.
